PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR: RADIANT ORCHID

This year, to every designers surprise, Blazing Blue was not named PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR, that honor went to Radiant Orchid.

0.1-Lilly

Radiant Orchid is a beautiful deep purple, closer in tone to fuchsia than blue or lilac. It is a color that is often hard to identify clearly and that varies in tone depending on your monitor. But it has a lot of punch and blends perfectly with a multitude of colors like lilacs, pinks, greens and blues. And for the daring ones, match them with some red, orange or even yellow, and everyone will be amazed by the results.

Go all out and put Radiant Orchid at the forefront with stunning wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Or use it as an accent in your make-up, your accessories, your bouquets, your decor, your cake, your invitation or even your cocktails. One way or another, this gorgeous Pantone Color of the Year will give your wedding all of the impact you always wanted to create!

The least you can say is that the new Color of the Year Radiant Orchid is not for the modest, nor the conformist. It calls for a certain ballsiness, but despite its bite, it breathes romanticism and softness and is well-suited for every kind of wedding.

BEST 2013 WEDDING TREND #15, PATTERNS, Part 3

PATTERNS

Lots of patterns, aside from polka dots and stripes, have become popular in the last years: the rustic plaid, the graphic chevron, the elegant damask, the psychedelic paisley, the modern lattice and the original animal print. You can be demure and use them just as accents and details or go for broke and DARE!

One thing is sure, nobody will remain indifferent and your wedding will be unique forever in their mind.

Dare with plaid!

If you want to display your Scottish roots or to give a little country twist to your wedding, plaid is the perfect choice!

BIRD-CAGES: A ROMANTIC LOOK

Bird-cages are really trendy this year and they always give a very romantic and vintage look to any arrangement. You can use them in many ways. Fill them up with flowers or add candles to make a unique and colorful centerpiece.

A great idea is to turn them into a card container.

They can also become the main element in arrangements for the cake table or the whole room decor.

For more examples, go see my Pinterest at http://pinterest.com/francemo/birdcages/.

After finding a superb bird-cage for only $14,99 at Homesense, I got the idea to mix blues, purples and greens, with shiny textures, tea lights and candles, to inspire spring, softness and romanticism.

I founds all my little candles and the green place mat at the Dollar Store and Bouclair Maison, I borrowed the big glass candle and the purple tablecloth from my sister, I discovered the purple candlestick at the Village des Valeurs and the bottle at a yard sale. The flowers also come from Dollorama and from www.efavormart.com.

And just for fun, I made these cute table numbers, that I would have put on a metallic card holder, decorated with a flower or a bird.

FLOWERS, Part 2

For the ceremony, I decided to line the aisle with 4 long vase arrangements. I found some beautiful tropical flowers, fuchsia and orange, at the Dollorama. I added colored sand, bamboos, tulle and foliage, to create superb arrangements, in all modesty.

On the other hand, I had to really spend a lot of time looking for nice roses and petals. Because, cheap roses, like the ones you find at the Dollorama, are really ugly and tacky. So I took my time, I search everywhere to find the best quality/ price. I finally found the best  place,  www.efavormart.com , which had all kinds of beautiful flowers at a very reasonable price. I also ordered an aisle runner, round mirrors and candles, so that the delivery price was worth it. It’s always a bit nerve-racking to get a web order, because you haven’t seen the merchandise and sometimes there can be bad surprises.

In this case, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the flowers (I had a bad surprise with the rest of the shipping, but that is another post). I was able to create a lovely bouquet for the bridegroom table, which couldn’t have looked better, even with fresh flowers, in my opinion.

I used the rose blossoms in my centerpieces and in several little arrangements for the gift table.

I also used them in my tulle concoction behind the bride and groom and all around the room.

For the rose petals, I shopped around and found http://www.petalgarden.com/, a really good website. They have a great selection and even a tool that can help to calculate how much petals you need, according to your needs, be it for a complete aisle or only on the centerpieces. You then can order a sample pack of 84 colour samples, for only $5. That way you can see the colours and choose the perfect ones. The prices are really good, with many bargains and the delivery is quick. The result was really pretty. I sprinkled most of it in the aisle and the rest on the tables.

My total budget for flowers and petals for the ceremony and reception: $145. For the following: 4 aisles arrangements, 12 centerpieces, 4 bouquets, 5 littles arrangements for the gift table, the central point of my tulle drape, two columns and a 30 feet aisle. Pretty good, no? Just the bridal bouquet can cost up to $150. Obviously, I couldn’t have done all of this with fresh flowers. I would have had to compromise my vision, while in this case I didn’t and the results were superb. So this is my argument in favor of artificial flowers. It is quite possible to create very beautiful things for a very reasonable budget!

FLOWERS, Part 1

Flowers are one of the most important element in a wedding decor. Usually, it all starts with the wedding bouquet, which gives the colours and the tone of the event. But when all you have is a small budget, you can’t even think about using fresh flowers, especially if you have to decorate the ceremony and reception spaces.

I must tell you that when I read designers or stylists blogs or books and they say it’s a sin to use artificial flowers, it really bugs me. I agree that fresh flowers are the best option, but it is possible to create beautiful artificial flowers arrangements, for a fraction of the price and the logistic constraints.

For my friend Lynn’s wedding, I needed 3 kinds of flowers: gerberas for the centerpieces, tropical flowers for the isles arrangements and roses, blooms and petals. I estimated that each flower had to cost a maximum of 45 cents, if I wanted to do everything I wanted to do within the budget I had. I started at the Dollorama, because I knew I could find a lot of flowers for $1 a bunch. You can also find beautiful flowers at Homesense, Bouclair and Z’Axe, but they’re almost the same price as fresh flowers, which is not worth it for a wedding. If you want permanent arrangements in your home, then it’s a whole other thing.

I found fuchsia and orange gerberas at the Dollorama, which were perfect for what I had in mind, along with all sorts of little filling flowers and several lovely tropical flowers. The only thing I didn’t find was beautiful roses.

Gerberas were my centerpieces starting point. I loved their freshness and simplicity. I found colored vases at Ikea that I arranged in a cercle on a mirror, sprinkled with rose petals and I placed one gerbera per vase. I put a candle in the middle, set in a vase filled with green sand, added a few little roses in the sand and finally some green tea lights all around.

When the candles were lit, it was very luminous and colourful.

I made small little bouquets that I arranged on the bar and on the cake table.

I also used them to decorate the bridegroom basket.

The morning of the wedding, I bought two fresh gerberas that I slipped in the bow behind the bride and groom chairs, for the ceremony. A little surprise touch, much appreciated by the bride!
