PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR: RADIANT ORCHID

This year, to every designers surprise, Blazing Blue was not named PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR, that honor went to Radiant Orchid.

0.1-Lilly

Radiant Orchid is a beautiful deep purple, closer in tone to fuchsia than blue or lilac. It is a color that is often hard to identify clearly and that varies in tone depending on your monitor. But it has a lot of punch and blends perfectly with a multitude of colors like lilacs, pinks, greens and blues. And for the daring ones, match them with some red, orange or even yellow, and everyone will be amazed by the results.

Go all out and put Radiant Orchid at the forefront with stunning wedding and bridesmaids dresses. Or use it as an accent in your make-up, your accessories, your bouquets, your decor, your cake, your invitation or even your cocktails. One way or another, this gorgeous Pantone Color of the Year will give your wedding all of the impact you always wanted to create!

The least you can say is that the new Color of the Year Radiant Orchid is not for the modest, nor the conformist. It calls for a certain ballsiness, but despite its bite, it breathes romanticism and softness and is well-suited for every kind of wedding.

BEST 2013 WEDDING TREND # 15: PATTERNS, Part1

STRIPES

There’s so many types of prints and patterns, all more interesting than the other, I will have to write a blog on each of them, so you can see all they can be.

Stripes are a pattern with multiple personalities. They are classic in black and white. They can feel nautical or Parisian in blue. They can be so pretty in pink or red. They can be thin and delicate, bold and dynamic, oblique and contemporary. They’re always daring and know how to make a visual impact. Actually, they can adapt to all wedding elements.

They become demure on wedding dresses.

CHRISTMAS ON MY MIND

I will take a little break from weddings and cakes to share with you another one of my passions… Christmas. Here’s something that will probably change the way you see me, but what the hell: I have a 47 Santa Claus collection, that I display every year, with so much pleasure. Tacky? Noooo! They’re so cute, don’t you think?

Yeah, I’m a Christmas freak and I totally own that! When, on Halloween, the Dollorama starts to put out their Christmas decorations, I really have to dig my heels in not to buy them right away. And then I start, right at that moment, to think about centerpieces, arrangements and wreaths! It’s a sickness, I know, but a very inspiring sickness.

And what’s more, in the last few years, Christmas is having a blast. We aren’t only stuck with red, gold and green anymore. These colours are still classic, but we can now find Christmas decorations in all colours! Pink, purple, turquoise, lime green! Look how beautiful!

A big trend that is still going on this year? Feathers! Bouclair has gorgeous feathers  trees and wreaths that will modernize any Christmas decor:  www.bouclair.com/content/holidays2012/.  Actually, you can find there a multitude of beautiful and more than affordable Christmas knickknacks, from the whimsical ball to the sparkling table runner, from the shiny tinny tree to the colorful plates. My advice, wait for the week following Christmas, everything is on sale, at least 50% off. It’s really worth it!

The Dolloramas, the Dollar Max depot in Boucherville, HomeSence and Zellers are all amazing places to find all sorts of decorations, balls, ribbons, bauble, candles, at a very little price. With a little bit of imagination and less than 20$, you can dream up stunning centerpieces and sensational wreaths. That is what I’m gonna show you in the following weeks, with my own creations and the ones I found on Pinterest. Here’s a little taste, a trendy centerpiece I’ve done last year and a very classic one I did last week.

A VERY SPECIAL WEDDING: Part 4

ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES, ONCE MORE

Really, this project is testing my capacity to adapt to any situation and to change my mind. More than once, I had to go back to the starting block and take another direction. More than once…

1) A waisted opportunity

I looked for florists around my client’s region, which I visited before meeting her, so I could give her choices for her flowers bouquet. My favorite:  Foliole (http://www.fleuristefoliole.net/mariage.htm), on Labelle boulevard. The first time I got there, I was mesmerized by all the superb accessories and arrangements. Something caught my eye right away, a bright yellow artificial craspedia spray.

I couldn’t see the price, because the florist was already asking if she could help me and she got me interested in the fresh flowers. But the image stayed in my mind. When I started to create my arrangements on paper, I included these cute little flowers, because I thought they were perfect to set off the other two main colors, lime and orange. My plan was to buy them next time I would go meet my client.

Three weeks later, I went back with the bride to be and, big deception, they were gone! I didn’t follow one of my Golden Rules, if you see something unique and interesting, if it’s not too expensive, just buy it right away. Because you may never see it again! I’m paying for my mistake now. I had to start to search once more for little yellow flowers.

2) Two options for the ceremony

When I first visited the hall, we had decided that the ceremony would be on the dance floor, with the tables pushed on the side. When I met the chef, who was organising the event, he told me that was impossible. He didn’t have the staff needed to set the tables in an hour, after the ceremony. Which meant that the ceremony had to be somewhere else. Two options: either outside on the terrace, which is very nice or inside, in the foyer, in front of the closed hall doors.. We will have to decide a couple of days before the big day, the weather being the deciding factor. The outside option is very cool, beautiful, green and easy to organise. Inside, it’s a bit more complicated… the setting suggested by the chef, in front of the doors, will need some embellishment. So I need to be ready for both…

3) Badaboom, bing, bang, crashhhh!

I wanted to do two tall arrangements to indicate the start of the alley. Last year, I bought 2 pairs of tall vases. I kept 3 of them and lended the 4th to friends who use it in their home decor, with their own arrangement. So I had now 2 vases the same and one different. I started to create my arrangements with colored branches, with my little cat prowling around. She’s crazy about branches, leaves, flowers… I have to be carefull. When I finished, I put a pig plastic bag around the two vases. I don’t know how she did it, but she made them fall and one of them broke into a thousand pieces… Damn! I have to change my set-up again! I called my friends and asked to borrow their vase, which I have to go get in Rosemère, to be able to have a pair of tall vases. After that, I keep my branches & long leaves away from my little one, either out of her reach or very well protected. Even if she checks my every move, she won’t be able to disturb my plan any time soon!

Here you go, these were some examples of all the changes I had to make along the way, and there’s more. It’s really good for my character, these amonts of adaptability that I have to find at my deepest self… See, you can always get some positive out of everything…

To be continued…

FLOWERS, Part 2

For the ceremony, I decided to line the aisle with 4 long vase arrangements. I found some beautiful tropical flowers, fuchsia and orange, at the Dollorama. I added colored sand, bamboos, tulle and foliage, to create superb arrangements, in all modesty.

On the other hand, I had to really spend a lot of time looking for nice roses and petals. Because, cheap roses, like the ones you find at the Dollorama, are really ugly and tacky. So I took my time, I search everywhere to find the best quality/ price. I finally found the best  place,  www.efavormart.com , which had all kinds of beautiful flowers at a very reasonable price. I also ordered an aisle runner, round mirrors and candles, so that the delivery price was worth it. It’s always a bit nerve-racking to get a web order, because you haven’t seen the merchandise and sometimes there can be bad surprises.

In this case, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the flowers (I had a bad surprise with the rest of the shipping, but that is another post). I was able to create a lovely bouquet for the bridegroom table, which couldn’t have looked better, even with fresh flowers, in my opinion.

I used the rose blossoms in my centerpieces and in several little arrangements for the gift table.

I also used them in my tulle concoction behind the bride and groom and all around the room.

For the rose petals, I shopped around and found http://www.petalgarden.com/, a really good website. They have a great selection and even a tool that can help to calculate how much petals you need, according to your needs, be it for a complete aisle or only on the centerpieces. You then can order a sample pack of 84 colour samples, for only $5. That way you can see the colours and choose the perfect ones. The prices are really good, with many bargains and the delivery is quick. The result was really pretty. I sprinkled most of it in the aisle and the rest on the tables.

My total budget for flowers and petals for the ceremony and reception: $145. For the following: 4 aisles arrangements, 12 centerpieces, 4 bouquets, 5 littles arrangements for the gift table, the central point of my tulle drape, two columns and a 30 feet aisle. Pretty good, no? Just the bridal bouquet can cost up to $150. Obviously, I couldn’t have done all of this with fresh flowers. I would have had to compromise my vision, while in this case I didn’t and the results were superb. So this is my argument in favor of artificial flowers. It is quite possible to create very beautiful things for a very reasonable budget!
